In America, — up to 40% of all food never gets eaten. Half the fruits and vegetables grown in the United States don't make it to stores for reasons that can be as simple as they are too small or too big, too lumpy or too bumpy.
Numerous food rescue organizations pick up food from local farms, retailers, and large producers. Most are members of Feeding America, formerly America's Second Harvest. Community members receiving nutritional assistance often live at or below 200% of the poverty line even while working a 40 hour a week job. The USDA poverty guideline as of July 1, 2016 is 452.00/week per person in the household.
